It lies north of Thornhill and west of Moffat. Created a Royal Burgh in 1598 but it did not grow till the early 19th century development of coal mining and textile production. Sanquhar is known for its wool fair (held in July), a quality production of two-coloured pattern of knitting is widely known as “Sanquhar knitting” (takes its name from this small parish). The town has a lead mining museum, Sanquhar Castle , Tollbooth museum, Saint Bride's Parish church, Drumlanrig Castle, gardens & country gardens and a notably tiny post-office.
